China narrows semiconductor technology gap with South Korea
The technological gap in memory semiconductors between China and South Korea is narrowing. According to the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association, China's YMTC is now estimated to be only one year behind Western technology in NAND Flash production. In the DRAM sector, China's CXMT trails Korean competitors by approximately two years, while the gap for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) stands at three years.
Simultaneously, Samsung Electronics' DS division is reportedly seeking to increase DRAM and NAND prices for smartphone manufacturers by 7% to 10%. Negotiations have already commenced with Chinese smartphone makers, and Samsung plans to invite Apple to the negotiating table during the fourth quarter of the year.
Market research firm Omdia predicts that memory prices will remain at elevated levels through the first half of 2027. This price pressure is driven by a shift in production focus toward high-margin products like HBM and server DRAM, which may impact the availability and cost of LPDDR used in mobile devices.
