Semih Varol apologizes after detention for insulting police

TikTok influencer Semih Varol has issued a public apology following his detention for allegedly insulting police officers during a live stream. The incident occurred during a broadcast on the social media platform, leading to widespread public reaction.

Following instructions from the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, Varol was taken into custody under investigation for ‘insulting a public official due to their duty’. After providing a statement to prosecutors, Varol released a video expressing regret, stating, “I apologize to our state and our police. This will not happen again.” He further noted that he felt ashamed of his actions and that his words were wrong.

Legal experts note that under the Turkish Penal Code, insulting a public official while they are performing their duties is a specific offense. Authorities typically examine digital recordings and audio from live streams to determine if the legal elements of the crime have been met during such investigations.
