Semyon Varlamov secures first NHL win in two years

New York Islanders goaltender Semyon Varlamov earned his first NHL victory in 712 days during a 4-3 shootout win against the Nashville Predators. This milestone follows a grueling two-year period during which Varlamov underwent two partial knee replacements and extensive rehabilitation.

After his last win on November 14, 2024, Varlamov faced significant uncertainty regarding his professional career. Despite the severity of his injuries, he returned to the ice this season, making 20 saves in the victory against Nashville. The Islanders held a 3-0 lead early in the second period before the Predators mounted a comeback, eventually forcing the game into a shootout where Bo Horvat secured the win.

Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche noted that Varlamov’s return is the result of immense hard work and training, rather than luck, as the veteran goaltender has worked to return to play without pain or medication.
