Sempra Energy seeks permits for major LNG expansion in Texas

Sempra Energy unit Port Arthur LNG has initiated the federal permitting process for the Port Arthur LNG North Project in Southeast Texas. This major expansion aims to increase the company’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) export capacity on the U.S. Gulf Coast.

The proposed project would include four liquefaction trains capable of producing up to 27 million metric tons per annum (mtpa) of LNG, with each train potentially reaching 6.73 mtpa under optimal conditions. Additionally, the development would feature three LNG storage tanks and marine facilities equipped with up to two berths for tanker loading.

If the project receives approval and is constructed, exports could commence in the second half of 2034. The facilities would be situated on land already owned by Port Arthur LNG. This proposal follows Sempra’s ongoing development of Port Arthur Phase 1 and Phase 2, which have a combined capacity of 26 mtpa.
