Semrush report highlights divergence between AI citations and brand mentions

A new analysis from Semrush regarding its 2026 AI Visibility Index reveals that AI search engines treat citations and brand mentions as distinct visibility signals. The study, which analyzed 126 million US prompts from early 2026, found that a website can be frequently cited as a source without its brand being explicitly mentioned in the generated narrative.

For example, in ChatGPT results for the US finance sector, Investing.com ranked seventh among cited domains but only 50th among mentioned brands. This distinction suggests that while citations can support authority and referral discovery, brand mentions are necessary for building awareness and influence. Experts suggest that effective Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) must address both metrics rather than treating them as interchangeable.

Concerns have also been raised regarding the potential for a ‘shadow web’ of content created specifically for AI agents rather than human users. This mirrors historical SEO challenges such as keyword stuffing and cloaking, where content was optimized to manipulate search engine algorithms rather than provide value to people.
