Sen. Elissa Slotkin Calls SAVE America Act a Vote‑Rigging Proposal
U.S. Sen. Elissa Slotkin, a Democrat from Michigan, told a town‑hall audience that the SAVE America Act – a voter‑ID bill backed by President Donald Trump – would “rig our democracy” and make it difficult for Democrats to win any future election. She also claimed the measure would disenfranchise married women by requiring birth certificates for those who changed their surnames after marriage.
Republican lawmakers rebuffed Slotkin’s allegations. Sen. Rand Paul and Sen. Mike Lee said the bill simply verifies U.S. citizenship and does not target women, likening the ID requirement to existing employment‑verification forms. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R‑FL) promoted attaching the SAVE Act to all must‑pass appropriations bills, while Rep. Brandon Gill (R‑TX) questioned the impact of limiting voting to citizens only.
The dispute comes amid ongoing national debates over voter‑ID laws. Proponents cite Georgia’s recent early‑voting surge—about one million voters in the latest primary, surpassing the 2022 record—as evidence that stricter ID rules do not suppress turnout. Critics argue the legislation could impose new hurdles for voters, especially women who change their names after marriage.
