Sen. Mike Lee faces GOP backlash over SAVE America Act filibuster push
Senator Mike Lee of Utah urged Republican senators to adopt a “talking filibuster” to bypass the Senate’s 60‑vote rule and pass the SAVE America Act, a voting‑reform bill that would tighten election‑integrity requirements. Lee criticized the “Zombie Filibuster” and suggested weeks of extended debate could force Democratic opposition to yield. While some Republicans such as Senators Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz voiced support, others including Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Lindsey Graham and Lisa Murkowski warned the change could destabilize Senate procedures. Former President Donald Trump publicly backed Lee’s effort.
The strategy sparked a sharp intra‑party rebuke. Senators John Cornyn and John Kennedy publicly “piled on” Lee, saying his push misleads Trump and that a forced filibuster “is not gonna happen.” Conservative Partnership Institute vice‑president Rachel Bovard condemned the criticism, calling it contempt for the GOP base. The dispute highlights growing tensions within the GOP over voting‑law legislation and Senate rules.
