Sen. Ron Wyden Launches Inquiry into Kratom and Flavored Vape Policy Links

The inquiry alleges a pattern of quid‑pro‑quo after large political donations from the tobacco and kratom industries, including a $5 million contribution from Reynolds American to a pro‑Trump political action committee and a reported financial interest by Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin in Botanic Tonics.

Wyden stresses the request is an inquiry, not a subpoena‑powered investigation, and the allegations remain unproven. The focus is on teen access to flavored vape products and kratom, substances the FDA has warned pose addiction and health risks, and on state actions such as Florida’s emergency scheduling of concentrated kratom compounds.
