Sena Madureira landfill fire continues for one month in Acre

A large-scale fire at the municipal landfill in Sena Madureira, Acre, has been burning for approximately one month without effective containment. Located along the BR-364 highway, the fire produces a continuous cloud of smoke that affects neighboring villages and commercial facilities.

Local residents report an increase in respiratory issues among children and the elderly. The smoke has also disrupted local industry, forcing a nearby plywood factory to dismiss employees during periods of high soot concentration. The fire is believed to have reached deep layers of solid and organic waste, causing prolonged combustion in the subsoil.

Social vulnerability is a significant factor, as indigenous families and other highly vulnerable individuals frequent the area to search for food and recyclables, exposing them to toxic gases. While the Fire Department initially responded, there has been a lack of sustained action from municipal authorities to resolve the crisis.
