Senacon investigates 70 fuel stations for abusive price increases in Brazil

Brazil’s National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon) has launched 70 administrative processes against fuel stations suspected of abusive pricing. The investigation follows reports from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) indicating profit margin increases exceeding 70% in several regions.

The targeted stations are primarily located in the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, and Paraná. The action was prompted by approximately 330 consumer complaints received by the ANP. Major distributors, including Vibra Energia, Ipiranga, and Ale Combustíveis, are among the companies under scrutiny.

Under the Consumer Defense Code, the investigated entities face potential fines of up to R$ 14 million. The stations have been granted a period of 15 to 20 days to present their formal defenses. In response to the situation, Senacon has called for an emergency national meeting with consumer protection agencies to coordinate nationwide inspection and enforcement efforts.
