Senad operation in Canindeyú leaves two dead, sparking calls for investigation

Religious and indigenous organizations in Paraguay are demanding a transparent and independent investigation following a Senad operation in the Yhapo 4 community of Canindeyú on August 14, 2026. The operation resulted in the deaths of indigenous leader Antonio Carrillo and teacher Catalino Correa.

The National Coordination of Indigenous Pastoral (Conapi) expressed deep indignation, stating that the loss of life within an indigenous community is an extremely grave matter requiring a firm and responsible response from state institutions. They have called for an exhaustive and impartial investigation to clarify the exact circumstances of the deaths.

Archbishop Martínez Flores of Asunción has also joined the call for justice, stating that the deaths “demand truth, justice, and a responsible investigation that clarifies what happened.” The Cardinal used the incident to highlight broader social issues, including poverty, malnutrition, and the displacement of indigenous peoples.
