Senamhi strengthens El Niño preparedness in Ica
The National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology of Peru (Senamhi) is strengthening disaster preparedness in the Ica region in anticipation of the 2026-2027 El Niño phenomenon. During a coordination meeting with the Regional Emergency Operations Center (COER) Ica, specialists presented meteorological data regarding precipitation patterns and potential scenarios for intense rainfall.
Key areas of concern include the Cansas sector, where more than 15 populated centers face risks from the activation of dry ravines during November and December. Authorities reviewed 37 critical points in the region and 649 previously reported emergencies associated with heavy rains. The initiative emphasizes the need for early warning systems and local government response plans to prevent the isolation of districts, particularly following the declaration of a state of emergency in various districts of Ica.
