Senasa corruption case: Court grants four-month extension for investigation
A Dominican court has granted a four-month extension to the Public Ministry to conclude its investigation into the Senasa corruption case. Judge Deiby Timoteo Peguero approved the request, which allows investigators more time to finalize the formal indictment against former Senasa director Santiago Hazim and several other co-defendants.
The investigation involves allegations of a massive fraud against the state, with the Public Ministry estimating losses between RD$15,000 million and RD$19,000 million. The scheme reportedly operated between 2020 and 2025, impacting the national health insurance system.
During the hearing, the court rejected defense requests to replace preventive detention with house arrest for several of the accused. Mirna Ortiz of the Special Prosecutor's Office for the Prosecution of Administrative Corruption (PEPCA) noted that the investigation remains active and could potentially implicate additional individuals and entities. Authorities have already seized approximately 15,000 pages of medical and financial documents as part of the ongoing probe.
