Senate battleground candidates rely heavily on out-of-state campaign funds

Campaign fundraising for the 2026 Senate battlegrounds has become increasingly nationalized, with candidates relying heavily on donors from outside their home states. An analysis by OpenSecrets of 17 candidates across nine key battleground states reveals that two-thirds of the $289 million in individual contributions raised through mid-July originated from out-of-state donors.

Fourteen of the analyzed candidates received the majority of their individual contributions from beyond their state borders. Experts attribute this shift to several structural factors, including limited donor bases in less-populated states, the proliferation of online fundraising platforms such as ActBlue and WinRed, and a national donor class prioritizing congressional majorities over local interests.

While Democrats often lean on national donor networks and Republicans utilize national party infrastructure and outside groups, the trend reflects a broader, decades-long retreat from locally sourced campaign funding.
