Senate candidates focus on Social Security solvency and election maps

Senate candidates in several states are centering their campaigns on the future of Social Security. To prevent a projected 22% benefit cut when the program faces insolvency in 2032, many candidates—primarily Democrats—are proposing to lift the current payroll tax cap. Currently, Social Security taxes are only applied to earnings up to $184,500; candidates in states such as Michigan, Iowa, and Texas are advocating for higher income earners to pay more to bolster program revenues.

In the broader context of the upcoming Senate elections, the battle for control of the chamber remains focused on key states. While Republicans have largely paused advertising in North Carolina, Democrats view states like Maine, Alaska, Ohio, and North Carolina as critical components of their path to securing a Senate majority.
