Senate Committee on Indian Affairs to consider Tribal housing and land bills

The U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs is scheduled to meet on September 23 to consider several pieces of legislation impacting Tribal housing, land, and governmental authority. A primary focus is S. 5354, the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Modernization Act of 2026, which seeks to reauthorize and update the 1996 law governing federal housing assistance in Indian Country.

Additional legislation under consideration includes the Poarch Band of Creek Indians Parity Act, a bill regarding Catawba Indian Nation membership, and measures to place California land into trust for the Pechanga Band of Indians. The Eastern Band of Cherokee Historic Lands Reacquisition Act is also on the agenda.

In Minnesota, Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan, an enrolled member of the White Earth Nation, is campaigning for a U.S. Senate seat with a focus on maintaining Minnesota’s tradition of representation on the Indian Affairs Committee. Tribal leaders have emphasized that federal representation is vital for ensuring tribal priorities are addressed in national policy development.
