Senate HELP Committee report alleges oversight gaps in abortion pill distribution

The U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee has released a report titled ‘Mifepristone Without Guardrails: An Investigation into How Chemical Abortion Drug Makers Are Putting Mothers and Babies at Risk.’ Led by Chairman Bill Cassidy, the investigation examines the operations of Danco Laboratories, GenBioPro, and Evita Solutions, the three companies FDA-approved to market mifepristone.

The report alleges significant gaps in oversight regarding the drug’s distribution and prescription. Key findings include the companies’ inability to ensure online prescribers comply with FDA Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy requirements. Notably, Danco and GenBioPro acknowledged they have never decertified a single prescriber, despite the rise in mail-order abortions and concerns regarding telemedicine prescriptions with minimal medical evaluation.

Additionally, the investigation highlights deficiencies in reporting complications. The report also raises concerns regarding overseas manufacturing, noting that while Danco’s pharmaceutical ingredient for Mifeprex is manufactured in Spain, it is finished at an undisclosed facility in Europe. Senator Cassidy has called on the FDA to reinstate safeguards and crack down on prescribers who violate requirements.
