Senate introduces Let Kids Play Act to regulate private equity in youth sports

Senator Chris Murphy has introduced the Let Kids Play Act in the Senate, a federal proposal aimed at regulating the role of private equity in youth sports. The bill seeks to prohibit certain investment practices by what it terms “vulture investors” that could negatively impact families and children.

Targeting entities involved in organized athletic participation for those under 18, the legislation would bar practices such as junk fees, mandatory travel arrangements, restrictive contracts, and consolidation strategies that limit consumer choice. Supporters argue the measure is necessary to address an increasingly expensive and adult-driven marketplace that pressures families into year-round specialization and high costs.
