Senate leaders delay legislative action on Flock Safety surveillance
Senate leaders from both parties have yet to propose legislative action to address surveillance concerns regarding Flock Safety and similar companies. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer sent a letter to Flock Safety CEO Garrett Langley demanding the company delete non-crime information collected by its technology, disclose the volume of data stored on its servers, and clarify if any federal agencies have accessed that data.
Schumer expressed concerns regarding privacy and due process, noting that hackers previously bypassed encryption on a camera system. While Schumer criticized the lack of insight into company contracts and law enforcement usage, he did not threaten a subpoena in his correspondence.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Majority Whip John Barrasso have not taken a strong stance against the technology or proposed legislation to implement guardrails or bans. Thune indicated support for light guardrails on artificial intelligence models but did not specify if these would apply to automated license plate readers.
