Senate Leadership Fund shifts campaign funds from North Carolina to Kansas

The Senate Leadership Fund, a major Republican super PAC, is shifting its campaign resources from North Carolina to Kansas ahead of the midterm elections. This strategic pivot comes as Republican candidate Michael Whatley has consistently trailed Democrat Roy Cooper in recent polling in North Carolina, despite the group having already spent over $30 million in that state.

In Kansas, the group is launching a seven-figure advertising campaign to support incumbent Republican Senator Roger Marshall, who is facing a competitive challenge from Democratic nominee Adam Hamilton. Recent polling shows a tight race, with Hamilton leading Marshall by a slim margin. The shift highlights a more defensive posture for Senate Republicans as they seek to protect their majority in states that were previously considered safer for the GOP.

Other Republican groups have also shown signs of retreating in North Carolina. Old North Action reduced its advertising reservations by approximately one-third last month, and Americans for Prosperity Action announced a $22 million campaign for five Senate GOP candidates that notably excludes Whatley.
