Senate Majority Leader Thune cites lack of consensus on daylight saving time bill
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) stated on Monday that there is currently no consensus or clear path forward regarding the Sunshine Protection Act, a bill intended to establish permanent daylight saving time.
Despite increased pressure from President Donald Trump, who has used social media to advocate for the legislation, several Republican senators have expressed opposition. Senator Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) has voiced concerns regarding the hardships of late-winter sunrises, noting that similar measures have been repealed in the past.
Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) also cited safety concerns, particularly for children in northern and rural states who must commute to school during very early, dark hours. Thune noted that positions on the issue often depend on regional geography.
