Senate to hold week-long legislative sittings in Kilifi
The Kenyan Senate will relocate its operations to Kilifi County for a five-day legislative programme from September 21 to September 25, 2026. This move, authorized by a Senate resolution in May, aims to bring parliamentary business closer to citizens and strengthen ties with county governments.
During the week, lawmakers will conduct plenary debates and committee sessions outside the main Parliament Buildings in Nairobi. The schedule includes oversight visits by various committees to inspect national and county government projects within Kilifi. Additionally, the Kenya Women Senators’ Association (KEWOSA) is planned to conduct outreach activities, including a visit to Mtangani Women’s Prison in Malindi and school visits at Gede Primary School.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi stated that preparations for the sittings are at an advanced stage. The initiative is supported by Article 126(1) of the Constitution, which allows either House of Parliament to hold sittings at any location within Kenya.
