Senator Alex Padilla inspects SFO immigration holding facility

California Senator Alex Padilla conducted an unannounced visit to an immigration holding facility at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to investigate reports of increased detainments. The facility, operated by Customs and Border Protection (CBP), has reportedly been used as a makeshift detention site, leading to concerns from constituents, attorneys, and family members regarding the length of stays and living conditions.

During his visit, Padilla noted that while the facility is not a formal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) site, it is being utilized for similar purposes. He emphasized the need for transparency and highlighted concerns regarding detainees' ability to access food, water, restrooms, and communication with legal counsel or family. Padilla observed fewer than 10 people in the facility at the time of his visit.

A spokesperson for CBP stated that the SFO facilities provide appropriate accommodations, including access to medical services when necessary, noting that the length of processing varies based on individual circumstances. This oversight follows a similar unannounced visit by Representative Kevin Mullin in late August.
