Senator Eric Schmitt misidentifies sports team during Jack Smith hearing

During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Senator Eric Schmitt (R-MO) accused former special counsel Jack Smith of perjury following a failed attempt to link him to an alleged conspiracy in Atlanta. Schmitt claimed to have evidence that Smith attended an NBA game between the Atlanta Hawks and the Golden State Warriors on February 3, 2024, the day after Fani Willis and Nathan Wade announced their affair.

However, the accusation faltered when Smith clarified that he did not attend an Atlanta Hawks game. Instead, Smith testified that he had attended a University of Iowa Hawkeyes game in Maryland on that date. Records confirmed that the Iowa Hawkeyes played in College Park, Maryland, on February 3, 2024.

Senator Amy Klobuchar challenged Schmitt’s premise, noting the confusion between the NBA team and the collegiate team. Klobuchar criticized the use of unverified information to make serious accusations of misconduct and demanded an apology for the flawed line of questioning.
