Senator Antonino Morales Toledo faces scrutiny over staff and political ties
Oaxacan Senator Antonino Morales Toledo is facing scrutiny following reports regarding his political associates and alleged links to criminal activity. Controversy arose after the Morena party's state leadership shared images suggesting the recruitment of Rodolfo León Aragón, a former judicial police director linked to investigations involving the 1993 assassination of Cardinal Juan Jesús Posadas. Although the national leadership of Morena later issued a statement denying that León Aragón had officially joined the party, the incident has fueled criticism of the senator.
Further allegations involve Morales Toledo’s staff, including José Antonio López Ríos, who was reportedly arrested in August 2024 in the Istmo de Tehuantepec with cash, a firearm, and fuel containers. Despite these reports, López Ríos reportedly continues to serve as an advisor in the Oaxaca Secretariat of Administration.
Additionally, the murder of journalist Alejandro Leyva Aguilar in San Pablo Etla has drawn attention to the senator. Leyva had recently published accusations against Morales Toledo concerning alleged ties to fuel theft and land disputes. While authorities have not officially established a link between the journalist's death and his publications, the timing has intensified the political controversy. Morales Toledo has dismissed these accusations, characterizing them as political attacks.
