Senator Bensusán advocates for federal approach to Argentina carbon market
Argentine Senator Daniel Bensusán has called for a federal approach to the development of the country’s carbon market, arguing that benefits must reach the specific territories where natural resources are located and projects are implemented.
During a Senate session, Bensusán supported a bill aimed at establishing regulations for carbon markets. These markets allow projects that reduce or capture greenhouse gases through activities such as soil management, agricultural production, or energy projects to certify results as economic credits. These credits can then be traded to provide financing for environmental initiatives.
Bensusán noted that La Pampa is well-positioned to utilize this tool due to its agricultural activity and potential in waste management and energy. He emphasized that the discussion must address climate change impacts, such as altered rainfall patterns, droughts, and floods, rather than focusing solely on commercial criteria. His stance aligns with observations from the Federal Council of the Environment (COFEMA), which has requested greater jurisdictional participation and rules to ensure environmental integrity.
