Senator Bernie Moreno claims non-Christians are unfit for Senate

Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno stated during a rally in Chillicothe, Ohio, that individuals who do not believe Jesus died for their salvation should not serve in the Senate. Moreno, a naturalized citizen from Colombia, directed his comments toward the Michigan Senate race between Republican Mike Rogers and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed.

Moreno described El-Sayed, who was born in the United States, as an affront to him as an American. He questioned whether El-Sayed understands that rights come from God Almighty and asserted that El-Sayed should be nowhere near Washington, D.C.

The remarks come amid a heated contest in Michigan, where El-Sayed is running for office. The Senator's comments regarding religious requirements for public office stand in contrast to Article VI of the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits religious tests as a qualification for any public office or trust under the United States.
