Cleitinho Azevedo officializes Minas Gerais governorship candidacy

Senator Cleitinho Azevedo has officially announced his candidacy for the governorship of Minas Gerais following a period of political instability and internal conflict within the Republicanos party.

The impasse began in late July when the senator's candidacy was vetoed by the party's national leadership after he failed to attend a state convention. Azevedo attributed his recent decision-making fluctuations to personal grief following the death of his younger brother, Matheus Azevedo, from leukemia. After a series of withdrawals and formal apologies to the party leadership, including national president Marcos Pereira, the Republicanos party reversed its decision and authorized his run.

Azevedo's ticket will include former mayor Luís Eduardo Falcão as the vice-governor candidate. As part of his commitment to the party, the senator has stated he will not utilize the Republicanos electoral fund for his campaign.

The political landscape in Minas Gerais has shifted as a result of these developments. The Liberal Party (PL), which had previously considered supporting Azevedo, has moved forward with its own 'pure-blood' slate, nominating Flávio Roscoe for governor and Charlles Evangelista for vice-governor.
