Senator Cleitinho Azevedo declares run for Minas Gerais governor

Senator Cleitinho Azevedo of the Republicanos party announced that he will contest the 2026 Minas Gerais gubernatorial election, naming former Patos de Minas mayor Luís Eduardo Falcão as his vice‑governor candidate. He explained that the death of his younger brother, Matheus Augusto Azevedo, from leukemia delayed his formal declaration.

Despite a party note earlier in July stating the party would not launch his candidacy, Azevedo confirmed his intent at a press conference in Divinópolis and cited strong poll leads—around 38‑40 % support in recent surveys—as the basis for his decision. He also received a public endorsement from singer Gusttavo Lima, who posted the message “Meu governador!” in support of the ticket.

Later, the Republicanos leadership reversed course, withdrawing official backing for Azevedo and endorsing Marcelo Aro of the PP for the governorship, yet poll data still list Azevedo as the leading contender in the state.
