Senator Gabriel Elizondo calls for increased federal security funds for local municipalities
Senator Gabriel Elizondo Pérez of Coahuila is calling for the 2027 federal budget to ensure that increased security funding directly strengthens state and municipal corporations. While the 2027 Federal Expenditure Budget Project includes more resources for security, Elizondo emphasized that these funds must translate into tangible operational capacity, equipment, training, technology, and intelligence for local institutions.
Elizondo noted that local police are the ones on the streets daily and require certainty and sufficient tools to perform their duties. To address this, he is promoting the creation of a ‘Permanent Fund for the Strengthening of Security’ within the Senate. This mechanism aims to provide long-term support for the capabilities of states and municipalities, moving away from one-year budgeting cycles.
The senator also highlighted the security strategy in Coahuila led by Governor Manolo Jiménez Salinas, citing institutional coordination and investment as key factors in maintaining strong local corporations.
