Senator Gabriel Elizondo proposes academic protections for pregnant students

Senator Gabriel Elizondo Pérez has introduced a legislative initiative aimed at protecting the academic rights of university students during pregnancy and postpartum. The proposal seeks to establish a period of academic protection spanning six weeks before and six weeks after childbirth to ensure that motherhood does not force students to abandon their studies or lose academic cycles.

The initiative was inspired by the case of a 22-year-old student who lost an entire school year because her child's birth coincided with final examinations. Elizondo intends for these measures to be applicable in universities and faculties across Mexico, particularly in Coahuila, mirroring protections already found in labor laws.

Presented during the 61st anniversary of the Instituto Tecnológico de La Laguna, the proposal is currently undergoing the legislative process within the Senate's corresponding commissions.
