Senator Gabriel Elizondo warns of financial burden from new Cadastral Law

Senator Gabriel Elizondo Pérez of the PRI has expressed concerns regarding the recently approved “Ley Catastral” (Cadastral Law) in Mexico. He argued that the reform imposes a heavy financial burden on municipalities by requiring them to modernize cadastral systems without sufficient support. Elizondo warned that this could force local governments to either increase property tax collections or divert funds away from essential public services such as water, drainage, and paved streets, particularly impacting smaller municipalities.

To mitigate these risks, Elizondo and his colleagues in the PRI are seeking the creation of a specialized fund to assist municipalities with the costs of modernization. Additionally, the senator criticized the ruling Morena party, accusing it of promoting initiatives that serve the interests of a few while neglecting the potential negative impacts on the general population. He contrasted national political trends with the governance model in Coahuila led by Governor Manolo Jiménez Salinas, which he described as being based on citizen coordination.
