Senator Hugo Ccahuana targeted in armed robbery in Madre de Dios
Peruvian Senator Hugo Ccahuana and his delegation were victims of an armed robbery on Thursday while traveling in the Madre de Dios region. The incident occurred near the Florida Baja sector of the Interoceanic Highway, approximately 44 kilometers from Puerto Maldonado, as the group was returning from an inspection in the Manu province.
Ccahuana reported that between three and five armed individuals intercepted their vehicle. The assailants reportedly struck the senator in the head with a firearm's grip and forced him to exit the vehicle. The attackers also detained the driver and security personnel before fleeing. Stolen items included mobile phones, laptops, GPS equipment, and satellite communication devices, including a Starlink system.
The senator had been in the region to investigate the unauthorized construction of an 18-kilometer road within indigenous territories. Ccahuana noted that the attackers asked if they were transporting gold, suggesting a possible link to illegal mining activities. Following the attack, the senator filed a formal complaint with the Criminal Investigation Division in Puerto Maldonado, calling for increased police presence and security on regional highways.
