Senator Jim Banks seeks permanent immigration laws after Indiana ICE sweep

Senator Jim Banks is calling for immigration enforcement policies to be codified into permanent federal law following a five-day ICE operation in Indiana. The sweep, known as ‘Operation Safe Community–Indiana’, took place from August 30 through September 3 and resulted in 426 arrests across the state.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported that those detained were involved in various offenses, including sex crimes, assault, domestic violence, drug trafficking, and weapons violations. The agency noted that the arrests included individuals allegedly affiliated with gangs such as MS-13, the 18th Street gang, and Tren de Aragua.

Senator Banks argued that while executive actions are currently producing results, they remain vulnerable to reversal by future administrations. He is urging Congress to transition these enforcement measures into permanent law to ensure continuity in immigration policy.
