Senator Jinggoy Estrada suffers knee injury while preparing for medical exam
Senator Jinggoy Estrada’s left knee reportedly gave way on Wednesday, August 26, while he was preparing to leave the New Quezon City Jail for a scheduled medical appointment. The incident occurred as the detained lawmaker was getting ready to travel to Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan for X-ray imaging of his knees.
Estrada, who is currently in custody facing plunder charges related to an alleged flood control kickback scheme, has been suffering from recurring knee pain and joint swelling. Court records indicate a prior diagnosis of osteoarthritis.
The Sandiganbayan’s Fifth Division had granted Estrada temporary release for up to four hours to undergo the examination at the private medical facility. While prosecutors had previously contested the request—suggesting a mobile X-ray unit or a government hospital instead—the court authorized the trip. Estrada’s office stated that his orthopedic specialist is expected to provide a full assessment of his condition following the examination.
