Senator Kingibe accuses FCT Minister Wike of unapproved borrowing

Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has accused FCT Minister Nyesom Wike of securing loans for the capital without the required approval from the National Assembly.

Kingibe stated that her allegations are based on a review of Debt Management Office records covering the period from August 2023 to March 2026. She noted that while Wike has appeared before the Senate’s FCT Committee, that committee has only sat once, and he has not appeared before the full Senate to seek legislative authorization for these borrowings.

The Senator has raised these concerns with the Senate leadership, arguing that the minister’s powers do not exceed those of the President, who must submit loan requests to the National Assembly for approval. Kingibe challenged supporters of the minister to provide evidence of any Senate approval obtained for the loans in question.
