Senator Lindsey Graham Dies at 71, Sparking Tributes and Senate Seat Race

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina died Saturday night at age 71 after a brief, sudden illness. A medical examiner’s preliminary report attributes the death to an aortic dissection linked to cardiovascular disease.

Graham, chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and a longtime ally of former President Donald Trump, had just returned from a visit to Kyiv where he met President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and toured a Ukrainian drone facility. He was scheduled to appear on NBC’s Meet the Press and was campaigning for a fifth Senate term.

World leaders and U.S. officials quickly issued condolences. Trump called Graham “one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known.” Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy praised his support for their countries, and other members of Congress expressed shock and sorrow.

The death triggers a succession process in South Carolina. Governor Henry McMaster can appoint an interim senator until January, while state law requires a special Republican primary on Aug. 11 (runoff Aug. 25 if needed) to select the party’s nominee for the November election. Trump has floated Graham’s sister, Darline Graham Nordon, as a possible appointee, and other names are being discussed.

The FBI is providing resources to local authorities investigating the circumstances of Graham’s death, amid speculation about possible foul play.
