Senator Luis Fernando Salazar apologizes for perceived threat against journalist

Mexican Senator Luis Fernando Salazar Fernández of the Morena party sparked controversy after posting a message on X directed at journalist Enrique Acevedo. Salazar wrote, “vamos a ir tras de ti” (we are going after you), accusing the N+ news anchor of being a “vulgar mentiroso” (vulgar liar) following a report regarding a political aspirant.

Acevedo responded by highlighting the risks journalists face in Mexico, noting the distinction between debunking information and attacking the messenger. Following widespread criticism, Salazar issued a public apology via social media, clarifying that his statement referred exclusively to pursuing legal action rather than physical threats. He maintained that his intent was to use existing legal channels to address alleged defamation.

President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the senator’s language, expressing solidarity with Acevedo. She emphasized that public officials must not use expressions that can be interpreted as threats and stressed the importance of maintaining respect for journalistic work, even during disagreements with media outlets.
