Senator Lummis accuses banks of obstructing CLARITY Act

Senator Cynthia Lummis has accused financial institutions of attempting to obstruct the progress of the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, commonly known as the CLARITY Act. Lummis claims that banks are using their leverage to demand specific legislative changes as a precondition for their support, rather than engaging in good-faith negotiations.

A primary point of contention involves stablecoin regulations. Banks have expressed concerns that allowing cryptocurrency platforms to pay rewards on stablecoins could cause deposits to migrate from traditional banking accounts into digital wallets. Conversely, proponents of the bill argue that banks seek the advantages of digital finance while avoiding the regulatory requirements imposed on traditional lenders.

The legislation has already faced delays, including a stall during the summer Senate recess. Lawmakers are reportedly preparing a new attempt to advance the bill on September 15. The outcome of these negotiations will likely determine whether the cryptocurrency industry receives a clear legal framework or remains in a state of regulatory uncertainty.
