Senator Lummis blocks resolution against Trump’s taxpayer-funded ads

Wyoming Senator Cynthia Lummis blocked a nonbinding resolution introduced by Democratic Senator Maggie Hassan that sought to denounce President Donald Trump’s use of taxpayer funds for campaign-style advertisements. The resolution would have declared that such advertisements “should not be paid for by the United States government.”

As of Tuesday, the advertisements have cost taxpayers at least $2.5 million. The ads reportedly feature content similar to Trump’s 2024 campaign, including themes of a “final battle” against “globalists” and discussions regarding tax cuts and communism.

Senator Hassan criticized the move, stating that tax dollars should not be used for “propaganda campaigns for a President.” In response, Senator Lummis defended the administration, comparing the ads to former President Bill Clinton’s anti-drug campaigns and arguing that the distinction between public service and political messaging is applied inconsistently based on party affiliation.
