Senator Mark Kelly proposes tax hikes on high earners to fund middle-class relief

Senator Mark Kelly has outlined a Democratic proposal to address the cost of living crisis through the Working Americans’ Tax Cut Act. Appearing on CBS’s ‘Face the Nation’, the Arizona senator explained that the plan involves providing tax relief to lower and middle-income earners while increasing taxes on high-income individuals.

The legislation, which Kelly co-introduced with Senator Chris Van Hollen, aims to eliminate federal income taxes for individuals earning below $46,000. It also proposes additional reductions for those earning up to $80,500, with higher thresholds for married couples and heads of household. To fund these cuts, the act introduces a tiered surtax on high earners. This includes a five percent surtax on income above $1 million for individuals and $1.5 million for married couples, with a top tier of 12 percent on income exceeding $5 million for individuals.
