Senator Marsha Blackburn faces judicial recusal in lawsuit against Jack Smith
U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee is facing legal and political developments in both her judicial challenges and her gubernatorial ambitions.
In a legal matter, all federal judges within the Middle District of Tennessee have recused themselves from a lawsuit filed by Blackburn against Jack Smith. The lawsuit alleges that Smith committed constitutional violations by obtaining telephone records of Republican members of Congress. Blackburn’s legal challenge further contends that Attorney General Merrick Garland’s appointment of Smith as special counsel was unconstitutional, citing a lack of presidential appointment and Senate confirmation. Chief Judge William L. Campbell issued an order stating that the case will be reassigned to a judge from outside the district by the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Separately, Blackburn is campaigning for governor of Tennessee. During a discussion regarding her priorities, she emphasized addressing the cost of living, including expenses for groceries and gas, as well as housing and taxes. She expressed support for a ballot measure intended to prevent the implementation of a state property tax and noted her focus on maintaining the state’s economic direction.
