Senator Mike Lee blocks bipartisan bill to protect Kennedy Center
Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) blocked a bipartisan Senate effort to pass the Protecting Presidential Memorials Act via unanimous consent. The legislation, led by Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon) and supported by Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), aims to require explicit congressional authorization before any presidential memorial can be demolished or significantly altered.
The legislative push follows tensions between the Trump administration and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. President Trump has suggested the center could be demolished due to disrepair if his name is not added to the building, following a court ruling that blocked his attempt to rename the memorial.
While supporters argue the bill is necessary to protect national cultural landmarks from unilateral executive action, the Department of Justice has argued that the Kennedy Center is in a state of financial and physical collapse. Government lawyers stated the institution is “dangerously dilapidated, outdated and decrepit” and is projected to lose approximately $100 million per year.
