Senator Milagros Jáuregui requests removal of Moche erotic sculptures

Senator Milagros Jáuregui of the Renovación Popular party has formally requested that the Ministry of Culture remove erotic sculptures inspired by Moche fertility ceramics from public spaces in the Moche district of Trujillo.

Jáuregui argued that the open-air exhibition of these pre-Columbian representations violates children's rights and could negatively impact their mental health. She stated that the imagery may cause confusion in children aged one to five and could foster what she described as “unhealthy sexuality.” The senator proposed that these replicas be relocated to enclosed museums or specialized sites where they can be viewed under the supervision of educators or tutors.

The Moche ceramics, dating from the 2nd to 8th centuries AD, hold significant ceremonial and archaeological value, traditionally linked to land fertility and life regeneration. The three-meter replica installed in the Santa Rosa sector in 2022 has become a major local economic and tourism driver.
