Senator Moreno urges DOJ review of Ohio doctor force-feeding abortion pills

Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH) has requested that the Department of Justice review a case involving an Ohio doctor who force-fed abortion pills to his pregnant girlfriend. The incident involved Hassan James Abbas, a surgical resident who allegedly used his estranged wife’s identity to obtain mifepristone by mail. According to reports, Abbas crushed the pills and forced them into the mouth of Jona Affholder, who did not want an abortion.

Affholder suffered a hemorrhage following the incident and lost the pregnancy. Abbas pleaded no contest to four felony charges, including identity fraud and unlawful distribution of an abortion-inducing drug. He was sentenced to six months in jail and two years of probation. Moreno criticized the sentence as insufficient and urged Attorney General Todd Blanche to consider federal charges.

Additionally, Moreno called for a review of the FDA’s 2023 decision to lift in-person dispensing requirements for mifepristone, suggesting the deregulation removed critical safeguards.
