Senator O’Donoghue urges AT&LU to prioritize worker development

Senator Angelica O’Donoghue has called for the Antigua and Barbuda Trades and Labour Union (AT&LU) to prioritize worker development and prepare for a rapidly evolving economic landscape. Speaking at the union’s 87th Annual Delegates’ Conference on behalf of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP), O’Donoghue emphasized the historical bond between the labour movement and the political party.

Addressing the theme “Developing Stronger Workers, Stronger Future,” the Senator highlighted the impact of technological advancements such as artificial intelligence, automation, the digital economy, and cybersecurity on the modern workplace. She urged the union to expand its role beyond defending rights to include a greater focus on education, vocational training, digital skills, and financial literacy.

O’Donoghue also stressed the importance of preserving the movement's history, stating that “modernization must never become amnesia.” She encouraged older generations to ensure younger workers understand the historical struggles that secured current rights as the union looks toward its centenary in 2039.
