Senator Pedro Araya rejects PPD calls to evaluate party continuity

Senator Pedro Araya has rejected a request from the PPD Metropolitan Council to evaluate his continuity within the party. The tension arose following an interview in which Araya discussed his willingness to reach security agreements regardless of political origin, a stance the Metropolitan Council suggested was out of alignment with collective party definitions.

Araya criticized the move as an “artificial controversy” caused by a lack of internal debate and a misunderstanding of his comments. He maintained that his political actions are correct and emphasized that effective security measures should be adopted regardless of whether they originate from the government or opposition.

In contrast, the PPD regional leadership in Antofagasta has defended the senator. The regional board issued a statement supporting Araya as a legitimate representative of the Antofagasta region, arguing that attempting to impose disciplinary measures without consulting regional structures reflects a centralist approach that undermines internal democracy.
