Senator Rick Scott opposes Protect College Sports Act

Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) has opposed the bipartisan Protect College Sports Act, marking a departure from President Donald Trump’s support for the legislation. Scott voted against the bill, stating it “misses the mark by creating massive federal intervention” and includes nearly $200 million in new, unfunded spending that could contribute to the national debt.

While Scott expressed support for certain federal inputs, such as banning men from competing in women’s sports and establishing national standards for the transfer portal, he argued the bill goes too far. He specifically criticized provisions that would dictate conference changes, coach hiring/salary structures, and revenue loss for schools.

The proposed legislation includes several sweeping changes to collegiate athletics, such as establishing requirements for name, image, or likeness (NIL) agreements, capping agent endorsement contract fees at 5%, and allowing student-athletes one transfer without losing eligibility.
