Senator Robin Padilla defends use of aliases in confidential funds debate

During the Senate impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, Senator Robin Padilla defended the use of aliases in confidential fund documentation. Padilla argued that using pseudonyms is essential for protecting the privacy and security of confidential operations, drawing parallels to Philippine national heroes who used aliases during the Spanish colonial era.

The debate arose following allegations regarding controversial acknowledgment receipts from the Office of the Vice President (OVP) that featured names such as ‘Mary Grace Piattos’ and ‘Antonio Pagong’. Padilla suggested that even former Senator Benigno ‘Ninoy’ Aquino Jr. used an alias, Marcial Bonifacio, to underscore the necessity of secrecy.

Prosecution counsel Mae Divinagracia disputed these comparisons, noting that the historical context of wartime heroes differs from current administrative circumstances. Senator Bam Aquino also challenged Padilla’s assertion, stating that Ninoy Aquino was not entrusted with confidential funds. Divinagracia further clarified that while aliases may be used under specific legal circumstances, the disclosure of real identities remains a requirement.
