Senator Robin Padilla proposes bans on violent media and streaming services

Senator Robin Padilla has proposed stricter regulations on media content in the Philippines, suggesting a ban on television programs deemed violent or harmful to children. He specifically referenced the martial law-era policy that banned the anime series ‘Voltes V’ and other robot-themed shows due to their “war-like” nature and perceived negative effects on children.

Padilla extended his warning to digital platforms, stating he would support banning Netflix and other streaming services if they fail to control violent content. This proposal follows a school shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University that was livestreamed online. The senator argued that the Philippines should follow international examples of media regulation to protect young viewers from harmful shows accessible via free TV, social media, and the internet.

The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) has also urged lawmakers to grant Philippine authorities greater jurisdiction over social media, messaging, and streaming platforms, noting that current legal limits hinder the ability to trace threats and protect minors from violent content.
